This means blocks can be proposed and validated more rapidly, with the actual transaction execution occurring in the background and typically finalized in the subsequent block.
This new asynchronous model introduces a challenge: ensuring transaction validity before execution catches up. To address this, MultiversX has implemented a 'virtual mempool state'. This advanced mempool goes beyond the current chain state to predict future activity, tracking pending nonces and potential balance changes. This forward-looking view enables transaction proposers to select transactions that are likely to remain valid even after execution completes, maintaining network integrity despite the separated workflows.
To further safeguard the network's stability, Supernova incorporates two key mechanisms. The Execution-Result Inclusion Estimator (EIE) acts as a safeguard, limiting the number of execution results referenced in a block to ensure that even nodes with minimum specifications can safely process them. Additionally, an automatic backpressure system is in place, which reduces block capacity if transaction execution falls significantly behind, providing the system with necessary time to synchronize and catch up without compromising overall network health.
The Supernova upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the user experience for applications requiring rapid on-chain interactions. By enabling faster block finality, typically within 100-250 milliseconds for in-shard finality, and more predictable execution, the upgrade is particularly beneficial for high-frequency decentralized finance (DeFi) primitives, on-chain order books, and other systems that are sensitive to latency. This makes on-chain operations feel more immediate and responsive, akin to traditional application interfaces.
MultiversX has been rigorously testing Supernova on its testnet and devnet since August 20, consistently producing blocks with approximately 600-millisecond finality. The successful completion of these tests is a precursor to the planned mainnet activation scheduled for September 10, 2026.
