Despite a significant drop in crypto hacks, North Korean hackers continue to pose a major threat, with sophisticated attacks becoming more destructive. Traders should focus on securing private keys an

In the first half of 2026, cryptocurrency hacking incidents saw a substantial decrease by 47% compared to the same period last year, according to CertiK's latest report. However, this reduction is misleading as crypto losses fell only by 46.8%, mainly due to the absence of a single major hack like Bybit’s $1.4 billion theft from the previous year.

The largest contributors to Q2 hacks were KelpDAO and Drift Protocol incidents, which together accounted for over 70% of total losses, estimated at $807.5 million. These attacks are believed to have been carried out by North Korean state-sponsored hackers who continue to be a significant threat in the crypto space.

CertiK highlighted that phishing remains one of the most common attack vectors, driving $508.2 million worth of losses in Q1 alone. Wallet compromises were responsible for the majority of Q2’s losses, reflecting a shift towards more targeted and financially destructive attacks.

The data from TRM Labs corroborates CertiK's findings, showing that while total dollar thefts decreased, the number of incidents increased by over 100%. Smart contract exploits accounted for nearly two-thirds of these incidents. North Korean hackers have been using AI to enhance their schemes, making them more sophisticated and harder to detect.

CertiK emphasized the importance of securing private keys and implementing robust multisignature wallet management practices as a critical defense against attacks. They advised crypto protocols and institutions holding significant on-chain assets to harden every layer of key management, from hardware security to geographic dispersion among signers.

As the industry faces an elevated rate of attack activity, traders should remain vigilant and adopt stronger security measures. The continued presence of North Korean hackers underscores the need for ongoing investment in cybersecurity infrastructure across the crypto ecosystem.
