In Part 3 of Cointelegraph Research’s series on Bitcoin covenants, SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT is explored as a potential soft-fork upgrade. This cryptographic mechanism allows signatures to authorize any UTXO that matches certain criteria, significantly enhancing the flexibility and utility of pre-signed transactions.

SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT builds upon earlier concepts like SIGHASH_NOINPUT from Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja's 2015 Lightning Network paper. The proposal was formally suggested by Joseph Poon on the bitcoin-dev mailing list in February 2016, aiming to enhance transaction flexibility within a soft-fork framework.

The SIGHASH flag is appended to a signature and determines which parts of a transaction are signed and checked by the CHECKSIG opcode. Under standard modes like SIGHASH_ALL or SIGHASH_NONE, signatures remain tightly bound to specific UTXOs. However, SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT removes this restriction, allowing transactions to be reused across multiple compatible outputs.

By excluding the outpoint from the signature's digest, SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT enables pre-signed transactions to apply broadly without needing new keys or signatures for each transaction. This feature is particularly valuable in layer-2 protocols like Lightning Network and vault systems, where flexibility and reusability are crucial.

While SIGHASH_ANYPREVOUT improves the logic of pre-signed transactions, it does not enable recursive covenants or full transaction introspection. Instead, it relaxes binding between a signature and specific UTXOs, allowing signatures to be reused across multiple compatible outputs without compromising security.

The implications for traders are significant as this upgrade could streamline workflows in Lightning Network and vault systems by reducing the need for new key management overhead. However, users should remain cautious about potential misuse or vulnerabilities associated with reusing signatures across different UTXOs.
